How to get the most out of your appliances: Dishwasher

Joseph K.

Today we’re focusing in on another key home appliance that most Americans rely on every day: the dishwasher.

Think about your dishwasher for a moment. Isn’t it wonderful?

Sure, you may have fights with your spouse about how to load it properly, but overall, your dishwasher saves you boatloads of time, no matter how you slice it. You don’t have to spend hours scrubbing every dish clean – and you definitely don’t sanitize anything. Your dishwasher does it before you! What a glorious home appliance that many consider absolutely essential.

Do you remember the first time you had a dishwasher of your own? Perhaps you had one in your home while you were growing up but do you remember the first time you rented or bought a home that had one? Suddenly you had so much more free time, and so much less drudgery, when you had a dishwasher. More than likely, you never went back to the dishwasher-free lifestyle. You tasted freedom and you liked it!

But the important thing about dishwasher ownership is that to continue enjoying the good life, you must take care of it. It doesn’t take much time or effort, but following these tips can make a big difference in the longevity and reliability of your dishwasher.

Leave it open

The easiest way to keep your dishwasher in prime shape is by leaving the door slightly ajar in-between washes. This ensures humidity doesn’t stay trapped inside because it evaporates through the open door. If you don’t do that, excess moisture can become trapped in your dishwasher, which eventually grows into bacteria and mold. Stinky and gross! Avoid this by simply remembering to keep your dishwasher door open or at least slightly ajar whenever it’s not actively being used.

Easily get the stink out

If your dishwasher does start to smell at any point, quickly remedy the problem by running an empty load with a cup of vinegar. It naturally eradicates the bacteria and accompanying mold while still being gentle on your dishwasher. You may notice a strong vinegar smell initially, but within a couple of ours, all smells will be effectively neutralized and you won’t have to plug your nose every time you open the dishwasher anymore.

Don’t overload soap or dishes

Many people try to cram every last dish into their dishwasher. Unfortunately, this practice often backfires because each dish can’t be effectively cleaned and sanitized that way. Too much soap also results in residue build-up on dishes, which isn’t exactly how you want to eat off your dishes – to say the least! Save yourself the trouble of having to re-wash dishes by placing only a reasonable amount in your dishwasher, and go easy on the detergent.

Pay attention to any problems

If your dishwasher takes an inordinately long time to complete a cycle or it makes awful screeching noises, don’t ignore the problem and hope it’ll go away on its own. Seemingly minor problems can mushroom into big, expensive ones. Anytime you notice your dishwasher isn’t functioning optimally, call the dishwasher experts at Authorized Appliance.
