Why Your Laundry Still Stinks after Washing it – and How to Fix it

One of the most frequently ask questions we often receive here at Authorized Appliance Repair is: why does my laundry still stink? I just washed it!

There could be various culprits. Investigate and evaluate your situation to determine the problem before you waste any more time and water. Skip the frustration with these expert tips from Authorized Appliance Repair!

Your washing machine is dirty

Many people don’t realize that their washing machines get dirty, but they do. “Why would a washing machine get dirty?” they wonder. It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true. Washing machines need to be periodically run with hot water, and a cup of baking soda and vinegar mixed together in the detergent compartment. This rids the washing machine of any odors and mildew that may build up over time. To prevent your washing machine from getting dirty, anytime you run a cycle, make sure you leave the door and detergent try open for a few hours to allow it to air out properly. If the moisture from the cycle doesn’t dry out, the resulting mold and mildew will make your washer and your clothes smell awful.

Check your pockets

Before washing your clothes make sure you always check the pockets first. Loose items can easily get trapped in the inner workings of your washing machine. For instance, a stray piece of cheese can get stuck in your machine, and eventually rot. As that happens, whatever clothes you attempt to get clean will end up with that horrible rotting cheese smell on them. Do yourself a favor and prevent this from happening by always checking your pockets before washing clothes.

Don’t forget to run the cleaning cycle

Many washing machines have a specific cleaning cycle that removes soap residue from the washing machine, and keeps it smelling good. Lots of people forget to use this feature and end up with a stinky washing machine. We suggest you set a reminder on your phone once a month or every other month so you don’t forget to run the cleaning cycle. Your clothes will come out smelling fresh and clean every cycle when you make sure to run the cleaning cycle periodically.

That didn’t work. What now?
