Gas Range Burner Won't Light: Troubleshooting Guide
There's nothing quite as inconvenient as turning the knob on your gas range and getting nothing back — no flame, maybe just a persistent clicking sound, or sometimes total silence. Before you assume the worst, it's worth knowing that most ignition problems come down to a handful of common, fairly simple causes. Here's how to work through them methodically, starting with the easiest fixes first.
Start by Identifying the Symptom
How your burner is failing actually tells you a lot about what's wrong.
If you hear clicking but see no flame, the igniter is very likely sparking, but the gas isn't reaching it properly, or the spark isn't making contact with the gas. If there's no clicking and no spark at all, the igniter itself is the more likely suspect. And if you hear continuous clicking even when the burner is off, that usually points to a stuck igniter switch or moisture interference, which is worth addressing quickly since it can also affect how gas flows to the burner.
Pinpointing which of these you're dealing with will save you time, since the fix for each is different.
Clean the Burner Cap and Ports First
This is the single most common fix, and it costs nothing but a few minutes.
Grease, food debris, and spilled liquid regularly build up in and around the burner cap and the small ports the gas flows through. When those ports get clogged, gas can't reach the igniter the way it needs to, even if the igniter itself is working perfectly. This is especially common shortly after a deep clean, when soapy residue or moisture hasn't fully dried out yet.
To clean it: remove the grate and burner cap, lift out the burner base if your model allows it, and wash everything in warm, soapy water. Use a toothbrush or a similar small brush to clear debris from the little holes around the burner ring, then dry all components thoroughly before reassembling. Make sure the burner cap is seated back in its correct position — a cap that's slightly misaligned can prevent proper ignition on its own, even when it's clean.
Check the Igniter for a Visible Spark
If cleaning doesn't solve it, the next step is confirming whether the igniter is actually sparking.
Turn off the lights in your kitchen so it's easier to see, then try to ignite the burner while watching the igniter closely. A healthy igniter produces a consistent, bright blue-white spark that jumps reliably between the electrode and the burner. If the spark looks weak, discolored, or inconsistent, or there's no spark at all, the igniter is likely failing and will need to be replaced.
Wiping down the igniter itself with a damp cloth can sometimes resolve a weak spark caused by light grease buildup, but a consistently absent or very weak spark usually means the part itself has worn out.
Look for a Loose Electrical Connection
Vibration from everyday cooking and cleaning can gradually work igniter connections loose, especially on ranges that have been in use for a few years.
Before inspecting anything electrical, make sure the gas supply is off and the range is unplugged or the breaker is switched off. Remove the same burner components you'd take out for cleaning, and look for a loose or disconnected wire near the igniter — these typically use simple plug-in connectors rather than fixed wiring. Gently pressing any loose connection back into place resolves this in many cases, and it's a common explanation for a burner that works intermittently rather than failing outright.
Rule Out a Gas Supply Issue
If the burners aren't lighting and cleaning and the igniter both check out, it's worth confirming the gas supply itself isn't the problem.
Check that the gas valve behind the range is fully open, and take a look at the connection line for any obvious kinks or damage. If you notice a smell of gas at any point during this process, stop troubleshooting immediately, turn off the supply, ventilate the area, and contact a professional — this isn't something to continue diagnosing on your own.
If your range's stovetop burners are working fine but the oven burner specifically won't ignite, that's usually a sign the issue is isolated to the oven's igniter or safety valve rather than the home's gas supply.
Understand the Role of the Safety Valve
Gas ovens use a part called the safety valve (or gas valve) that keeps gas from being released until the igniter has reached the correct temperature. It's less commonly the cause of ignition failure than a dirty burner or a worn igniter, but it can fail.
If your igniter is glowing steadily but the burner still never lights, the safety valve not opening properly is one possible explanation. Testing it requires a multimeter and typically means removing a back panel or heat shield to access it, which makes this one better suited to a technician rather than a DIY attempt.
Why You Shouldn't Rely on Manual Lighting as a Fix
If you've resorted to lighting a burner with a match or a lighter to get by, it's understandable, but it's not a long-term solution.
