Few things are as quietly frustrating as opening the freezer for a handful of ice and finding an empty bin instead. It's rarely a sign that your whole refrigerator is failing — ice makers rely on a handful of specific components working together, and when one of them acts up, ice production is often the first thing to stop. Confirm the Ice Maker Is Actually Turned On

Check that the switch or setting is active, and if there's a physical control arm, make sure it's pushed down into the "on" position.

Check the Freezer Temperature
Ice makers need a genuinely cold freezer to work properly, and this is a more common culprit than people expect.
Most manufacturers recommend keeping the freezer at or near 0°F for normal ice production. If it's running warmer than that, even by a few degrees, ice production can slow down significantly or stop altogether. Check your freezer's temperature setting first, and if it's already at 0°F, try lowering it slightly to see if production picks back up.
If the temperature setting looks correct but the freezer still feels warm, that points to a separate cooling issue, like a worn door seal, a struggling defrost system, or dust-clogged condenser coils, rather than the ice maker itself.
Look for a Frozen Fill Tube
The fill tube is the small line that delivers water into the ice maker's mold, and it's prone to freezing up, especially in freezers that run colder than average or have inconsistent temperatures.
If the tube ices over, water can't reach the mold at all, and the ice maker effectively sits idle even though everything else is working. You can check for this by locating the fill tube (usually near the back or top of the ice maker) and looking for visible ice blockage.

As the filter loads up with sediment over time, water flow to the ice maker drops. Because the ice maker needs a full, correctly timed fill to form proper cubes, it's often the first part of the system to be affected by a restricted filter. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the filter roughly every six months, and if you're not sure when yours was last changed, that's a reasonable place to start troubleshooting.
Check for Ice Jams or a Blocked Bin
Sometimes the ice maker is working perfectly fine, but something downstream is stopping it.
If ice cubes clump together into a solid mass, or a buildup of frost forms inside the bin, the mechanism that pushes new ice out can jam, which then signals the ice maker to stop, since it reads the bin as full even when it isn't. This is also common if someone lifts the shut-off arm to grab ice by hand and doesn't fully lower it back into place afterward.
Check the bin for clumping or frost buildup, break up any jammed ice, and confirm the control arm or sensor isn't resting against a pile of frozen-together cubes.
Rule Out a Water Supply Issue
If none of the above resolves it, it's worth confirming that water is actually reaching the refrigerator in the first place.
Check that the household water shut-off valve behind or beneath the fridge is fully open, and that the water line isn't kinked, especially if the refrigerator has been moved recently for cleaning or repairs. If your fridge has a water dispenser, testing whether water flows normally from it is a quick way to confirm whether the issue is with the water supply itself or isolated to the ice maker.
Consider the Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve is the electrically controlled component that opens for a set number of seconds each cycle to send a measured amount of water into the ice maker's mold. It's a common wear part, and when it weakens or fails, the ice maker may receive too little water, resulting in small, hollow, or oddly shaped cubes, or no water at all.
Testing and replacing this valve involves accessing the water line and, in some cases, mild electrical testing, which makes it a reasonable point to bring in a technician rather than continue troubleshooting on your own.
Know When It's the Ice Maker Assembly Itself
If you've worked through temperature, filter, fill tube, and water supply checks and ice still isn't forming, the ice maker's internal control module or thermostat may have failed. These components typically aren't sold or repaired individually, so the usual fix at that point is replacing the ice maker assembly as a whole.
On some models, particularly certain Samsung French-door refrigerators with a dedicated "ice room" and evaporator cover, frost buildup or airflow problems behind that cover are a well-documented cause of reduced or stopped ice production.
